The Vote Is In: Meet Jabari and Azizi

September 24, 2010

The Prospect Park Zoo’s pair of baby boy baboons, Jabari and Azizi, are the new stars at Animal Lifestyles.

After three weeks of online polling and more than a thousand name submissions, the Prospect Park Zoo's baby Hamadryas baboons are officially named. The pair of baby boy baboons, born July 23 and 28, will be called Jabari and Azizi, meaning brave and precious in Egyptian. After giving careful consideration to all of the names submitted online, staff chose this pair of names to pay homage to the Hamadryas baboons' native turf. Besides Egypt, Hamadryas baboons are found in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and on the Arabian Peninsula.

Jabari and Azizi’s next big event is the annual Boo at the Zoo celebration Saturday and Sunday, October 30–31.  The troop will receive pumpkins in the spirit of the holiday.

The Hamadryas baboons can be found in the zoo’s Animal Lifestyles Building, alongside exhibits of tamarin monkeys, piranhas, and Pallas cats. Jabari and Azizi are on exhibit with their family from 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. daily until November 1, when their exhibit time will change.
